A Masterpiece of Victorian Engineering

Completed in 1901, the Glenfinnan Viaduct is one of Scotland’s greatest feats of engineering. Spanning 380 meters (1,248 feet) across the valley, the viaduct carries the West Highland Line, connecting Fort William to Mallaig. Its sweeping curve and graceful concrete arches make it one of the most photographed railway bridges in the world.

For Harry Potter fans, the Glenfinnan Viaduct is best known as the route of the Hogwarts Express. The Jacobite Steam Train, a historic locomotive, crosses the viaduct twice daily from April to October, creating a magical moment as it steams over the arches. The best viewing times are between 10:45–11:15 AM and 3:00–3:30 PM, when the train passes through.

Best Viewpoints for the Viaduct

The most popular viewpoint is a 15-minute uphill walk from the Glenfinnan Viaduct car park. From here, visitors can capture the perfect shot of the train crossing, with the mountains and Loch Shiel in the background.

Other great vantage points include:

• Glenfinnan Visitor Centre – Run by the National Trust for Scotland, offering history about the viaduct and the Jacobite rising.

• The shores of Loch Shiel, where you can see the Glenfinnan Monument, dedicated to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite rebellion of 1745.
